BSF announces 2018 World Series places

Thu 10 May 2018

The 18 teams that will play in the 2018 Softball World Series Tournament at the Imperial College Heston Venue near Heathrow Airport on 8-9 September have now been announced by the British Softball Federation.

This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the competition, and an unprecedented five European National Slowpitch Teams will be flying in for the event to provide stiff competition for the local and ex-pat teams based in the UK.

Their main target will be the ex-pat Team USA, who will be bidding for a third straight World Series win.

The World Series is a competition involving "national” or “regional” teams – even though many of the teams are made up of players living in the UK.  There are English, Scottish and Welsh teams made up of players who come from or live in those countries, plus GB Masters and GB Futures teams, and there are British-based ex-pat teams representing countries or regions from around the world.

Over the past decade, as the tournament has become better known in Europe, teams have flown in to represent Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and the islands of Jersey and Guernsey.

The demand for places has grown steadily over the years, and to fulfil one of its main aims for the tournament, the development of slowpitch competition in Europe, the BSF is now favouring applications from national slowpitch teams as opposed to club teams from the Continent.

New players

Many of the GB-based teams that take part in the Softball World Series are looking for new players who meet the qualification criteria and would like to try out for a place.

As far as possible, teams should be composed of players who have a passport from the country or region they are playing for.  Where a team genuinely cannot find enough players who qualify through nationality, they may then include players who were born and/or grew up and/or lived for a number of years in the country or region their team represents, regardless of what passport they hold.

Slowpitch players who meet one of these criteria for a Home Country or ex-pat team that has a place in the 2018 World Series are encouraged to contact the relevant Team Captain to arrange a trial.

Since the World Series is a high-level tournament (essentially A and B-grade), ability will always be a key factor in team selection, but the BSF is requiring each UK-based team to include at least two players this year who have not played in the World Series previously.
