Fourth place for GB at Slowpitch World Cup

Mon 19 Nov 2018

Plant City, Florida: 19 November – No one saw this coming, but Curaçao One, a team that finished fourth in the round-robin phase at the WBSC Slowpitch World Cup, pulled off four straight wins on Sunday to take the tournament title.

First, the Curaçao team defeated GB by a score of 11-9 to put paid to British hopes of a medal, leaving GB in fourth place, the same position they had managed in last year’s tournament.

Then Curaçao One eliminated the USA by 15-12, leaving the Americans, their country’s National Co-ed Slowpitch Champions, to finish in third place.

That brought Curaçao One up against the Bahamas, who had only lost once in the competition to that point, but Curaçao took them down by a score of 22-15.  Even that wasn’t enough to win the title, however, as the tournament format provided for an “if game” if the #1 seed lost in the final round, and so Curaçao One had to do it all over again.

This time, the score was 10-4, still in Curaçao’s favour, and Curaçao One took the Slowpitch World Cup title for the first time.

For GB, who had sent a strong squad to the Slowpitch World Cup this year and had high hopes of winning the tournament or at least achieving a medal, the result was a blow.  As GB had found out in the European Championship final in 2017, one bad game at the end of a tournament can be costly, no matter how well you play up to then.

However, Germany, Europe’s other representative at the tournament and the current European champions, will be even more unhappy with their result, as they finished sixth out of seven teams and won only twice in eight games.

Overall, however, the results reinforced the fact that the Slowpitch World Cup has become a very competitive tournament, with the majority of the participating teams capable of winning the title.

This bodes well for the future of the competition, which may become a full WBSC World Championship contested only by national teams in 2020 (though the WBSC now calls all its World Championships World Cups).
