GB Fastpitch League to kick off on 21 April

Thu 19 Apr 2018

The Great Britain Fastpitch League (GBFL) will begin its 2018 season this Saturday, 21 April, at Farnham Park, with a full slate of games for teams in the Women’s and Men’s Divisions.

The GBFL will have a slightly expanded playing schedule this year – seven playing dates instead of six – but will also have a slightly smaller number of teams, with four teams in each division.

Last year, the league had five women’s teams and six men’s teams, but many teams struggled at times to get enough players out, and the hope is that consolidation will eliminate that problem in 2018.

The GBFL is also under new management this year.  Lee and Jan Grafton, who successfully ran the league over the past two years with the help of Kenny Pregnell and others, have emigrated to the Cayman Islands, and for this season, the GBFL is in the hands of the GB Management Committee’s Events Subcommittee, consisting of Johanna Malisani, David Morris, Sian Wigington and Bob Fromer.

Looking to Europe‚Äč

Over the 2018 GBFL season, which ends at the beginning of June, teams will be battling for divisional titles and also for places in European Cup competitions that winning the title can bring.

Last year there were close races in both divisions, with a new team, The Mix, winning the Women’s Division by just two games over perennial champions London Angels.  The Men’s Division was even tighter, with Meteors Black edging out Meteors Green by just half a game.

All four of those teams are back this year and should be in the hunt for honours once again, and The Mix and the London Angels will waste no time getting their duel under way, as they meet in the first game of the GBFL season at 9.30 on the morning of 21 April.

On Saturday 5 May, an extra team will be added to the GBFL schedule, as the women’s fastpitch team from Lakenheath High School in Suffolk will play games against all four GBFL women’s teams to help the Lakenheath players prepare for their European High School Championship.

GBFL games will begin at 9.30 am on all seven playing dates and finish around 6.00 pm, and Great Britain Fastpitch League games are exciting and fun – well worth watching for spectators, who can also take advantage of the food and welcoming atmosphere at the Home Plate Bar & Kitchen in the baseball/softball clubhouse at Farnham Park.
