GB Select Team faces challenge in Schiedam

Mon 8 Jan 2018

A GB Select women’s softball team, made up of players from the GB Women and Under-19 squads, will head for Schiedam, just outside Rotterdam in the Netherlands, on Friday 12 January to take part in the Indoor Cup, Europe’s leading indoor softball tournament.

This will be the fourth successive year that the GB programme has sent a team to the Indoor Cup, which will start on Friday evening 12 January and continue over the weekend.  In 2017, supported by guest pitchers from the Netherlands and Belgium, the GB Select Team achieved a highest-ever fourth place finish.

Sixteen teams will take part in this year’s Indoor Cup.  This will include eight teams from the Netherlands, including the Dutch National Team, plus six American teams, Joudrs from the Czech Republic and GB Select.

The tournament will be played on three courts in two sports halls separated by a couple of hundred metres, and the pace is fast and furious during 50-minute games.  Teams take the field with eight players rather than nine, as the rectangular courts means that there is a no space for a right fielder.

After an initial round-robin featuring four groups of four teams, playoffs will begin on Saturday afternoon and continue through a final scheduled for 2.30 pm on Sunday.

Chelsie Robison
Laura Thompson
Rachael Watkeys

GB Women’s Team Head Coach Rachael Watkeys will double up as a player and an Assistant Coach, with the Head Coach role taken up by Robbie Robison from the GB Under-Team staff, and Simon Mortimer serving as Team Manager.

The nine British players will be supported by two Dutch pitchers, Anna-Be Bartels and Cheyenne Scheffer.

A report on the tournament will be posted on the BSF website on Monday 15 January.
