GB Slowpitch announces WBSC World Cup Squad

Thu 13 Sep 2018

Great Britain Slowpitch Head Coach Stephen Patterson has announced an 18-player squad for the 2018 WBSC Slowpitch World Cup tournament to be held from 15-18 November in Plant City, Florida.

In announcing the selections, Stephen said, “I have high expectations for this team, as I do for all our teams, and the players selected for the World Cup will offer us a great opportunity to take home a medal.  The World Cup title has eluded us since the tournament was revived in 2014 and played on an annual basis, and there is a hunger amongst this group that should bode well for GB.”

Selections have followed an established pattern of making tournaments accessible to new players, and nearly a third of the players selected for Florida have not played in this tournament before.  Two players have only been in the GB pool following open trials held as recently as last March.

For Stephen Patterson, this is about the value of ‘real’ playing opportunities for developing talent.

“Each of the players named in the squad has the ability to make an impact in the outcome of any game,” Stephen said.  “There is an excitement within the group about how that will materialise.  I look forward to watching it come together.”

The seven-team competition will include two teams from Curacao as well as teams from the United States, the Bahamas, the Turks & Caicos Islands, Germany and GB.

The GB players and staff will rendezvous in Orlando, Florida on 9 November, and as in previous years, the staff will seek out local playing opportunities to prepare for the event.

The World Cup will begin on Thursday 15 November and run through Sunday 18 November at the WBSC Softball Division headquarters at the Randy Larson Playing Fields Complex in Plant City.

Assistant Coach David Lee said, “I’m really looking forward to the World Cup.  There is a great mix of power, experience, youth and energy in the team, which makes it more likely than ever that we'll do well.”

The opportunity for sponsorship for the GB Slowpitch Team and the World Cup tour remains open, as GB National Team programmes are self-funded and players and staff invest their time and money to represent their country.
